A recursively generated tree family consists of a sequence of trees, each of which appends the same subtree to the root of the previous tree in the sequence. Disanto & Rosenberg (2017) used a recursively generated tree family to provide example calculations of the number of ancestral configurations: structures that arise in Wu’s (2012) pruning algorithm for likelihoods of gene trees given species trees.
