Pruning

PRUNING. Quercus lobata, Valley oak. East Oval Grove.

In pruning algorithms, most notably Joseph Felsenstein’s algorithm for the computation of phylogenetic likelihoods, a quantity is initially calculated for the root of the tree. The calculation is then recursively propagated, first through the immediate descendant branches of the root, then through their descendant branches, and so on, until the leaves of the tree are reached.
