EPOCHS. Quercus agrifolia, Coast live oak.

In evolutionary models, it is often of interest to divide time into discrete periods, and to count the number of speciation, extinction, or coalescent events that occur within each period, or epoch. For example, in models of gene trees and species trees, coalescence events in the species tree demarcate the epoch boundaries, and for each epoch defined by a pair of species tree coalescences, the number of coalescence events occurring in the gene tree during the epoch is tabulated.
